This week the academy was treated to a visit from novelist Alex Wheatle. . This British born writer with Jamaican parents grew up in care homes throughout his childhood and was sentenced to a term of imprisonment after the Brixton riots. He gave a presentation on his life and how he got to where he is to students from Years 9 and 10 as well as students in our alternative provision unit. Students told staff that they could listen to him speak all day, as he was “so fascinating and experienced” and others said that they believed they could “do good things like him if they worked hard and never gave up”. Students and staff alike were buzzing with an electric sense of amazement after leaving the talk.
